What is SMAF?

The Sint Maarten Aquatics Federation is the national governing body of aquatic sports from the Dutch side of the island Sint Maarten. As a hub which represents the different aquatic disciplines to the main worldwide aquatic organizations like the International Swimming Federation (FINA) and regional committees, associations and third parties who organize water-sports related competitions and events.

We provide information, assessment and communication between local clubs, sports associations and individuals who take part in any of the aquatics disciplines that takes place on the island and provide methods to comply with international standards that allow Sint Maarten to join and compete in all local, regional and worldwide events with the proper qualifications and certifications.

Although swimming is the only sport among these that is currently represented in Sint Maarten, should organizations organize these other activities, SMAF would be excited for the additions.

SMAF is a member in good standing of several larger organizations. These include:

Sint Maarten Sports and Olympic Federation (SMSOF) is the local organization that enables local sports in Sint Maarten to participate in the Olympic Games. All countries that wish to compete at the Olympics must have a National Olympic Committee.

Central American and Caribbean Amateur Swimming Confederation (CCCAN) organizes and supervises regional competition throughout the Caribbean region, including federations from Central and South America. CCCAN organizes such events as the CCCAN Championships and the CARIFTA (Caribbean Free Trade Association) Championships.

Union Americana De Natacion (UANA)  organizes and supervises the aquatic sports in the Americas and Caribbean. The UANA organizes such events as the UANA Swimming Cup and the Pan American Games.

The Federation Internationale De Natation (FINA) is the international governing body of aquatic sports, and as such all national federations are part of FINA. FINA organizes the highest levels of competitions, including FINA World Championships and the Olympic Games.
